Selank is a synthetic analog of the endogenous peptide tuftsin. It is investigated for its influence on anxiolytic and cognitive signaling pathways in neurological research models, and it also shows activity relevant to immune and enzyme-degradation pathways.
Developed at the Institute of Molecular Genetics of the Russian Academy of Sciences, Selank appends a Pro-Gly-Pro motif to the tuftsin core to improve stability. It has been studied as a nootropic and anxiolytic peptide in experimental and clinical settings in Eastern Europe, where much of its characterization took place.
Selank has been examined in neurological and immune models for GABAergic modulation, serotonergic activity, interferon and cytokine signaling, and enkephalin-degradation effects. Its activity spans both neurological and immune pathways, which is part of what makes the tuftsin-derived structure interesting as a research probe. The Pro-Gly-Pro modification, added for stability, is itself a point of study for how peptide half-life shapes central activity in the laboratory.
